STORY

The farm of the Buttafuoco Brothers has been producing for three generations extra virgin olive oil of superior category at the Martusa district of Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento. The farm extends for about 23 hectares. The olive groves, which belong to the Biancolilla monocultivar variety, are located in a hilly area with an agricultural vocation, far from factories or other polluting sources and neither fungicides nor other chemical fertilizers or herbicides have ever been used for the cultivation of the land and its organic product is controlled and certified by Bioagricert, a certification body authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

1950 – 1960

Pellegrino Buttafuoco inherits the land cultivated with almond and wheat. Plant vineyards with must grapes and table grapes. The grape must is sold to wineries (cooperatives of producers) and the table grapes to the local market.

1960 – 1970

Olive trees are planted between the vineyards to optimize agricultural production and the oil produced is sold to the oil mill.

1995

Pellegrino Buttafuoco dies and his wife, Iole Buttafuoco-Caruso, succeeds him in the management of the land.

1997 – 2000

Crisis of the social wine cellars: the company finds it difficult to sell the grapes produced. Iole Buttafuoco begins to uproot the vineyards no longer productive to devote himself only to the olive grove.

2002

Iole Buttafuoco dies and her son-in-law, Giovanni Dionisio, husband of her daughter Mimma, takes over the management of the land and starts the mechanization of the company.

2011 – 2012

The extra virgin olive oil Buttafuoco obtains the DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) Val di Mazara.

2013

Giovanni Dionisio, starts the procedure for the BIO certification of the Company.

2016

The Buttafuoco farm obtains the official BIO certification.

2018

With the olive harvest of 2018 begins the active and constant collaboration in the company of Dario Buttafuoco, eldest son of Giuseppe Buttafuoco, brother of Mimma Buttafuoco. This proves that the new generation is also committed to continue the family business by enhancing the territory, protecting the environment and ensuring, at the same time, a future for the company that is projected to increasingly extend the marketing of its products in European countries.
